But let’s start with a small historical outline. Google Chrome’s path to becoming the most popular browser was not an instantaneous one, although the pace of gaining more users on the Google Internet can certainly be considered impressive. Let’s take a look at the statistics and data about this browser and the choices of an ordinary Internet user. Almost 3.5 years passed from the official debut of Google Chrome in 2008 to the achievement of the status of the most popular browser in the world, when in June 2012 Chrome overtook the current leader – Internet Explorer from Microsoft.

Let’s recall what the market of systems and web browsers looked like when the first version of Google Chrome appeared. Windows 7 has just been announced to replace the badly received Windows Vista operating system.

At that time, Internet Explorer version 7 dominated the world (65% of the market) (and version 6 in many schools and offices, which did not even support opening a tab in the form of a card). The runner-up was Mozilla Firefox with 28% market share. In further places with a marginal share, you could find, among others, Safari from Apple (for Macs, PCs with Windows and then fledgling iOS), technologically advanced for those times Opera and a lot of internet “plankton” in the form of SeaMonkey or Maxthon.

Google Chrome – characteristics

Chrome itself is a de facto frontend for Chromium – an open source browser, also originally developed by Google. Due to the free license, many browsers use the same engine as the Chrome browser – for example Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi or today’s Opera are also based on the same database. This does not mean, however, that Microsoft’s and Google’s browsers are the same and work in the same way – although their hearts theoretically pump the same digital blood, updates, selection of add-ons and other elements can be very different.

Google Chrome from the market competition is characterized by the highest compliance with HTML5 standards, currently leading on websites – in the test it scores 528 points out of 555 possible, ahead of other web browsers (for example, Firefox can boast a score of 497 points). However, it should be remembered that this is only one of the indicators, and the choice of a browser should depend not only on the number and quality of supported technologies, but also on compliance with our digital habits, convenience of use and applied functions, and many other aspects. However, it cannot be denied that it is the compliance with the requirements of the websites that makes most users choose Chrome as the default browser on their devices.

Google Chrome – a matter of browser extensions for marketers and more

Google Chrome, due to its pedigree, gets along very well with many services offered by Google accounts – Google Docs, YouTube, Google Drive and others. Of course, it is also equipped with all the basic options available in most of these types of programs – incognito mode (option without saving browsing history), creating user profiles and personalizing your account and its synchronization, the option of storing saved passwords and many others.
