What is Google discover?
Google Discover (until 2018, Google Feed) offers high-quality content that can actively adapt to your interests by displaying relevant content and the latest data. For many, it is a reliable source of the latest information from around the world.
How is Google Discover different from the Google search engine?
The difference between the Discover service and the Google search engine is that the search engine responds to the user’s input from the interest list by displaying results (SERP – Search Engine Result Page), and the Google Discover function suggests personalized content automatically. Google Discover is based on a dedicated algorithm that uses information about the user such as:
– location history,
– search history in the browser,
– interaction and involvement on individual websites,
– “my activity” from other Google services (eg gmail, contacts, photos, calendar, maps, notes).
After processing the collected information, the system tries to reach the internet user in the best possible way, creating a dedicated content package in the form of:
– world News,
– match results (also live),
– video materials,
– warnings and alerts.
Discover also differs from the Google News pages in this. The evergreen content delivered to the user does not come only from news sites and it is not news from the last minute. These can be pages with a different form of presenting the content and subject range of the page titles that are “segregated”. Artificial intelligence is used for this, which helps to target the interests of Internet users.
Google Discover card – what’s in it?
Evergreen content, live results, notifications and news. The Discover tab consists of a headline, graphic, and when and where the source of your user-targeted article came from. On a classic-sized smartphone screen, the user will usually see two news. As you move your finger down the screen, more appear. Each piece of information can be marked with a heart (to get more notifications of this type and increase the chances that it will always be up-to-date), shared or described as uninteresting, which will allow the service to be even better adapted to our needs.
How do I turn on Google Discover and customize the Discover tab?
The Discover card service is available to users:
– in the Google application,
– in a browser on an Android phone or tablet,
– in some devices, where it is enough to swipe to the right when we are on the home screen.
Google Discover – good to know …
A very useful function in Discover is to adjust the information that appears to the topics of interest to the user, without the need to search for them. The service allows you to select notifications as well as exclude unwanted entries or sources.
How to adapt the Discover card to your needs? Nothing easier. If you have enabled “Internet and application activity” on your smartphone (after clicking on your profile picture or initials in the Google application and entering “Your data in the search engine”), search for “Settings” -> Channels and Interests -> Your interests. There you can check the list created by Google and modify it as you like.
Terms to appear on Google Discover
Google says there are a few key points around the fundamental principles to be eligible to appear on Discover. The content on the website must comply with the content policy, which prohibits:
– misleading the user by means of, inter alia, manipulation;
– promoting hatred, violence, cruelty, terrorism;
– using profanity;
– creating a clearly sexual context;
– creating medical content.
The above-mentioned actions are strictly forbidden, which of course is not surprising. Any self-respecting website will not allow itself to lose its reputation on the market by creating forbidden content. So what is worth focusing on to build an advantage over the competition and appear on the Discover tab?
Only show valuable and interesting content!
We have prepared a practical checklist with tips that will help you check or modify the discussed activities. Analyze the most important guidelines and check if your website is ready to get traffic from the discussed function on the Google account!
Responsiveness and speed of the home page
In some countries, Google Discover is dedicated to a mobile device only. For this reason, a website tailored for smartphones is the basis. Remember about the most common errors that can lower the site’s responsiveness algorithm rating:
– content wider than the screen,
– a small font that makes it difficult to read the text,
– clickable elements too close to each other.
Speed of action is no less important. This is one of the most important factors that affects the functioning of your website not only for Discover, but also for Google robots and, most of all, for users!
Do you know that… Almost 70% of customers admit that the slow loading time of the website influences their decisions related to the further use of the website. Regardless of how high-quality content and information on a given topic you will be serving, Discover tools need to be served quickly to the determined user!
Any errors will be shown to you by Google Search Console, to which you can link your Google account. All you need to do is click “Support on mobile devices” or “Basic internet indicators” on the left side of the menu – the tool will present any problems related to the responsiveness or loading speed of subpages. AMP technology, i.e. Accelarated Mobile Pages, may also be useful.
Publish interesting and most relevant content, compared to other pages
It sounds trivial, but the authors of the content know it’s probably the hardest thing to do. Building reliable content targeted at a given group of recipients is a long-term process. For Google, valuable and credible content that follows trends and accepted topics is important, and is not reproduced from other websites. It definitely can’t be a wall of text that no one will fully read.
Rich and original content is one that will include:
– insightful analyzes,
– reports confirmed by tests,
– interesting conclusions and summaries,
– correct stylistics, grammar and punctuation,
– structured content
– descriptive title, subheadings, paragraphs,
In order to appear in Google Discover, it is worth creating evergreen content on your website, which can be called evergreen content, i.e. permanent content, bringing new users to the site regularly. These are texts that rarely lose their relevance and will always be useful for a given group of recipients. They can be:
– industry articles,
– frequently asked questions and answers (FAQ),
– product descriptions.
The materials will appear on your website? This does not mean the end of work on them! The content published on the Internet can be slightly modified from time to time, add new content or original photos, when we decide that the content has lost its relevance and we are struggling to replenish the traffic. However, you must not depart from the topic, change the URL or use it on other websites.
Generate a high E-A-T ratio
Experience, authority, credibility, i.e. E-A-T (Expertise-Authoritativeness-Trustworthiness) are three indicators on the Internet that the Google algorithm pays a lot of attention to, especially in the case of the Discover function. What exactly do they mean? They relate to the built-up trust among web robots and users for the entire website. The measures are such factors as:
– service life and positive domain history,
– the growing popularity of the website,
– customer data encryption, i.e. security features such as SSL,
– operational reliability (rare errors caused by servers)
– frequent content updates.
It can be seen that the above factors are a must-have for any website, also in terms of SEO.
The E-A-T indicator also applies to authors of texts who must be verified in at least a few entries and recognized as an expert in a given field. Reviews of people using the site and generating views can help in this assessment. Therefore, it is worth giving the opportunity to comment or rate the article (using 1-5 stars).
It is worth strengthening the credibility of the materials created by adding the date of entry, name and surname of the author (along with a short description of his activity).
Make sure you have a title that reflects the essence of your content
The title is one of the most important elements of each article, guide or news. Importantly, it is very heavily taken into account by network robots. While in SEO it is worth using keywords in your titles, in Discover not. According to official Google recommendations, it should not cause extreme emotions such as unhealthy curiosity, excitement or indignation. Simply put – avoid clickbaits and create titles that correspond to your content.
Use your communication channels to promote entries
If you are also active in social media, try to choose the most interesting and best articles to promote them. Linking or sharing your post in several channels will help you reach a larger audience. This will certainly be noticed by the Google algorithm and perhaps will consider your content even more valuable, showing it, for example, in the Discover tab.
Prepare dedicated graphics
Another important element on the way to appearing in Google Discover is the right graphics. The Mountain View giant recommends including high-resolution images (min. 1200 pixels wide) in your materials. You will need to use max-image-preview: large or AMP.
Remember… The original photo taken by the website owner corresponding to the content will be much better rated than a random photo from free stock portals or using the website’s logo as an image.
Why is graphics so important? The answer can be seen on the Discover tab. Pictures occupy the vast majority of the display on any phone.
Meeting the guidelines should lead to your site being liked by users and featured on Discover. However, there is no 100% proven way to get there. The trends are very changeable and dynamic, which makes it necessary to know the subject and a bit of luck. It is worth using tools such as Google Trends, Senuto or Semstorm to stay up to date.
Remember that paying attention to the above tips and adapting the content of the website to the user’s needs is the way to go.
How to check the traffic generated by a website from Google Discover?
The traffic generated by the website from Google Discover can be checked in a free tool – Google Search Console.
When your website is connected to GSC and meets the minimum value for impressions for the feature in question, a new option in the “Performance” section called “Discover” should appear in the left menu.
Summary – is it worth appearing in Discover?
It is definitely worth fighting for the display of content that fits on the list of interests that the user has. The Discover function is one of the most developed services from Google. Internet users use it for free, receiving personalized messages, guides or other useful materials corresponding to their interests and level of knowledge.
Google Discover is a product oriented to the needs of the user and very clearly shows the policy pursued by the giant from Mountain View for the years to come. Striving for common and proven information is very important, hence the introduction of certain restrictions related to the nature of the content. Websites that are able to interest Internet users in their content have a greater chance of appearing on the Discover tab, thus gaining valuable traffic and a wider base of new customers. For this to happen, we cannot forget about the website’s responsiveness, original graphics and taking care of E-A-T indicators. Be patient and you will surely be satisfied with the results!
